Feb 21, 2008 TULIP FESTIVAL NIGHT SHOW CAST IS FINALIZED by Janine Calsbeek Sioux County Capital-Democrat (reprinted with permission of Pluim Publishing, Inc.)
ORANGE CITY – In looking for play clothes for the von Trapp children, what does Maria do? A. Lets them play in their good clothes B. Makes clothes out of old curtains C. Goes to the convent for help D. Calls Tom Hydeen It might be a good idea to call Tom Hydeen... or Janie Van Dyke or Wanda Vande Kieft. They are music director, director and producer of the 2008 Tulip Festival production of The Sound of Music. They met with the three dozen cast members Tuesday night, and started the evening off right... with a Sound of Music quiz. Who is the youngest von Trapp child? Why does Rolf come to the house? What does Marta want for her 7th birthday? The big question, though, is... how many children auditioned for parts for Orange City's Sound of Music production? One hundred fifty. Yes, said Vande Kieft, it was a hard choice for Van Dyke and Hydeen. The seven Von Trapp children are Greta Hays as Liesl, Joel Brogan as Friedrich, Malea Beeson as Louisa, Brendan Foughty as Kurt, Kendra Wieringa as Brigitta, Natalie Anderson as Marta and Aarika Van Gelder as Gretl. Laird Edman will be Captain von Trapp, and Emily Hinkle will be Maria. Playing nun roles will be Kathy Brogan as Mother Abbess; Nancy Landegent as Sister Berthe; Amy Anderson as Sister Margaretta; Sharon Vermeer as Sister Sophia, and other nuns: Mia Kornelis, Martha Rankin, Amy Korver, Susan Veltkamp, Julie Junck, Karina Smit, Leanne Bonnecroy, Lauren Boersma, Donna Muilenburg, Shauna Muilenburg, Lois Estell and Renae Van Voorst. Other roles will be played by Christopher Edman as Rolf; Donna Durham as Elsa the baroness; Rob Meerdink as Uncle Max; John Brogan as Franz the butler; Sara Van Zee as Frau Schmidt; Todd Vande Griend as Herr Zeller and dancer; Matthew Dengler as Baron Elberfeld; Carson Norine as Admiral Van Schreiber; and Sam Bonnecroy, David Vogel and Jonathan Haverdink as Nazis. The Sound of Music will be presented at Orange City's Tulip Festival the week of May 15, 2008.
Maria and the Captain Emily Hinkle will be playing Maria in the 2008 Tulip Festival night show, Sound of Music, and Laird Edman is Captain von Trapp. Auditions were held last week, and the first cast meeting was February 5. There are new ideas for 2008, said producer Wanda Vande Kieft, and lots of new people on the cast and crew. (Photo by Janine Calsbeek)
