2/6/06 NEW FESTIVAL FLOAT CELEBRATES QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY
Orange City ~~ Volunteers here have been hard at work for months on a new float, the biggest in parade history, for Tulip Festival's 2006 "Volksparade." The float honors Queen Juliana, whose birthday on April 30 is a national holiday in the Netherlands. Since June 2005, a team of 30 Orange City carpenters, welders, and painters have been crafting the 40-foot float on the chassis of a school bus. According to float designer and project leader, Bill Van Marel "We couldn't have accomplished this without everyone's help over the past months. I want to thank everyone who worked on this new float, especially Eugene Haverdink, who did a lot of welding." The new float features two gazebos, a bridge, and canoes that will carry paddlers in authentic Dutch costumes.
